The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Zaria Branch in Kaduna State has said that it would establish a women resource centre with a view to empowering them with skills towards taming the rising cases of rape and other abuses.
Chairperson of the association in Zaria, Dr. Lateefat Bello, made the disclosure shortly after inauguration of the new executive members of the association which was held at High Court 2, GRA in Zaria.
Bello said the move to establish the centre has become imperative as the association observes lack of viable economic activities as one of the reasons that exposes women to abuses.
She added that the center when established, would provide skills acquisition training to women and some funds to start their businesses.
“We are an NGO, we don’t have much money, but will put in our best to ensure that this goal is achieved through collaborative efforts with our partners,” she said.
She said the association would do its best to rid the society of the menace of rape, especially as it involves the underaged, because it is reoccurring on almost daily basis.
In her remarks, Mrs Joana Jatau Kadiya, former Attorney General of Kaduna State who monitored the election and swearing-in, advised the incoming leaders of the union to desist from gossiping and backbiting.
She also advised them to be diligent in tracking, prosecuting rape and other abuse cases and ensure justice for the victims.
Dr.Lateefat Bello was elected for a second term as the chairperson of the branch for another three years together with her team.
