The usual use of the waterways to unleash terror on Lagos residents during the ember months may suffer a great setback, as the police command said it has acquired three new high capacity gun boat to frustrate their efforts.
New Nigerian recalled that it has become a recurring decimal for armed bandits to attach banks and wealthy individuals in Lagos during the embers month, especially December, where several millions of naira were carted away, including lost of lives.
As part of efforts to ensure that the bandits meet their waterloo if they made an attempt this season, the Commissioner of Police Command, Fatai Owoseni said strategies have been put in place by the command in conjunction with other sister security agencies to ensure the bandits regret their actions.
Owoseni disclosed that part of the strategies include the acquiring of three new high capacity gun boats that are capable of dealing with any form of banditry on the waterways.

The commissioner, who made the disclosure yesterday at a press conference on the preparedness of the command for the ember months, said two of the boats would be launched by next week, while the launch of the third one would follow suit.

Disclosing that the boats are well equipped to combat any form of insurgency on the waterways, Owoseni added that more of the boats would be procured before December 2016 for the safety of the state.

“I want to assure you that we have increased our capacity with high capacity gunboats and would continue to increase police presence in the waterways. We are acquiring three gunboats and two of them would be launched next week and before December, we would have more”, he said.

Following the adequate security measures in place, he hinted that some kidnapping cases were prevented last week, saying some suspected kidnappers had planned to kidnap some “white” businessmen on the waterway.

Aside the waterways, the police commissioner said all the roads have equally be fortified to safe guard the lives and property of residents, including visitors, assuring that the state adequately protected.

“As we enter the ember months we want to assure residents and those coming from abroad that we will give them all its takes to safe guard them, secure them on the road and the waterways.

While we are intensifying efforts, members of the public should be security conscious and make use of the platform made available to report any suspicious movement or character to the security agencies for prompt action”, Owoseni enjoined.
While reeling out the achievement of the command in the last two weeks, he disclosed that 23 armed robbery suspects were arrested in different parts of the state with arms and ammunition.
He listed them to include three locally made pistols, a berreta pistol, one iron fabricated pistol, five live cartridges and ammunitions expended during robbery operations.
In addition, Owoseni said a Toyota Sienna bus and 17 mobile phones were also recovered from the bandits.
