Uyo Township Stadium gets face lift

Facilities in Uyo Township Stadium, Akwa Ibom State have been upgraded to give it a unique standard.
Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Monday Ebong Uko while taking journalists round the facilities said it was part of state government effort at promoting sporting activities in the state.
The idea of upgrading the facilities is to make the stadium an alternative and interesting arena that will enable Akwa United FC play their home matches other than international matches. Provide good ground for school sports competition for talents hunt he stressed.
Giving the place a face lift with standard facilities is also expected to reduce the demand for the use of the Nest of Champion otherwise known as Chief Godswill Akpabio International which is designed for international sporting competition, the Commissioner explained.
Unlike before, Uyo Township Stadium is hoped to generate more revenues to the state as guest, including VIPs room with best of facilities have been provided for a fee to any visiting sport officials who wishes to lodge there during any match.
Among other facilities at the stadium include four new flood lights in and outside for night matches, 47 toilets to provide convenience to players and fans as well as officials and change or rest rooms for players and VIPs during match.
The stadium will also continue to remain open to host other events of the state other than sports, Mr. Uko said.
Meanwhile, the stadium is wearing a Christmas look in preparation for the state Christmas Carol Festival this weekend.
Permanent Secretary Special Services, Mr. Aniekpon Mkpanah told newsmen that adequate preparations including security and crowd control mechanisms have been put on ground to ensure a hitch-free event.
Notable gospel artists from the state and outside are expected to perform to the glory of God in line with the vision of the state government to free the state of any ungodly powers.
Bishop Mike Okonkwo of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Lagos is hoped to minister the word at the event which would last for three hours.
