Useni urges support for farmers to boost agriculture

Senator Jeremiah Tumbut Useni representing plateau South, has said that it is important to support farmers to enhance agricultural activities while calling on youths to embrace farming as a profession for self reliance.
The Senator made the call at Tim Tali Rice Mills in Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State while doling out rice seeds and Napsack sprayers to rice farmers drawn from the six LGA of the Southern Senatorial district.
He said the “event has indeed marked yet another stride in getting to the newer scientific technology of improved yielding harvest of the most consumable food item in Plateau state, Nigeria and the world over”.
According to him,”it is of good importance as we gathered here today in readiness of my office efforts aimed at supporting constituent farmers to enhance their agricultural activities”.
Senator Useni further said his, “attention was importantly dragged to the area of rice farming, for the fact that farmers within the Southern Senatorial Zone are great farmers and harvesters of the commodity, therefore it is hope that the provision of rice and Napsack sprayers is not only to show my readiness in support of the farmers but to also emphasized the need to support agricultural activities of becoming more of our individual and collective revenue earner for the state and the country at large.”
He expressed hope to continue supporting the farmers, “in line with the Federal and Plateau State Governments policy of re-invigorating agriculture and in particular the rice farming.”
The Senator said that his choice of rice farmers in this direction is not that he is neglecting other crops, but rather is an encouragement of the rice farmers among others, and shall in due course encourage others.
“It is important to highlight that many of us most significantly our unemployed able youths should embrace farming and its allied, as a profession, in supporting not only themselves but doing away with reliance on the Governments for job creations,”.
The Senator urged the Plateau Agricultural Development Programme [PADP] and the Association of Nigerian Farmers Plateau State chapter, under the State Ministry of Agriculture, to always fashion out advanced scientific method of farming and educate the farmers for better output.
He stressed the need for absolute peaceful co-existence amongst the people of the zone in particular, the state as well as the country in general, saying without peace no meaningful development will, “come our way and we will never reap the benefits of whatsoever we are embarking in life.”
In his message the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbe represented by Mr. Danok Godwill Wapdiyal, appreciated the Senator’s gesture, which he said will along away in enhancing agriculture in the country.
Similarly, the Plateau State Commissioner of Agric represented by Mr. Lucas Joseph Garba, said the Ministry will continue to explore newer methods that will enhance farming in the state.
In his remarks, State chapter Chairman of Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria [RIFAN] Mr. Joshu’a who responded on behalf of the beneficiaries, appreciated the Senator’s gesture.
