The President of the University of Ibadan Alumni association, Dr. Kemi Emina has said the institution “is worst hit by the economic recession” compared with other tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Dr. Emina stated this during a chat with journalists in Ibadan on the construction of a 54-bedroom Post-Graduate Hall of Residence by the association towards reducing students’ accommodation problem in the University campus.
According to the Alumni body President, the N190 million Hostel project at the Ajibode end of the University now at its roofing stage, is expected to be completed and formally handed over to the University authorities in November this year during the Convocation ceremonies.
“The University of Ibadan is worst hit by the economic recession, compared with other tertiary institutions in the country, knowing that UI is top heavy, with most of the infrastructures already ageing,”she said
The UI Alumni President maintained that it was glaring that government alone could not single-handedly satisfy the enormous needs of the University, saying, “our target is to build ten of such structures on the University campus in the next ten to fifteen years.”
She however tasked all members of UI Alumni association that are yet to play their part to key into the project without further delay, saying,“we want the University of Ibadan to remain the first and the Best”.
“We are therefore calling on the over 200,000 alumnus of the UI to come to the aid of the University at this critical time of the economic recession which is not only peculiar to Nigeria, but worldwide.  If individual alumnus continues to give us N1, 000 every year, then we will be making over N1billion a year for the development of the University.”
While stating that the economic recession on Nigeria’s education sector would soon be a thing of the past, he called on Nigerians to endure and that Federal Government should remain focused and not get distracted in its approach towards resolving the economic crisis in the best interest of the masses.
