The University of Ibadan Senate on Thursday approved Monday June 16 as the reopening date for the commencement of full academic activities in the Premier University.
Also, the Institution’s Senate at a meeting presided over by Vice Chancellor, Prof Abel Idowu Olayinka okayed July 4 for the commencement of examinations for the students.
New Nigerian gathered that the dates were agreed on after the Senate considered the decision of the Institution’s Committee of Provost, Deans and Directors which included “an upward review of accommodation fees against next session” and that “there is need for regular interaction with the students while the university should find ways of improving on power and water supply on campus”.
The Senate at the meeting reportedly emphasized the need for the university’s administration to hold an interactive session with student body before being allowed into residence on the need to abide by the matriculation oath and conduct themselves in a responsible manner.
Professor Olayinka while speaking that University of Ibadan have lost eight weeks to the crisis which led to the closure of the university and that the session will now end around January 11, 2017 as against October 2016 in the original academic calender, said “those who are supposed to graduate and do convocation this year will now have to wait till next year”.
The Vice Chancellor noted that though some parents offered to assist the university, it is impossible for the University to introduce any fees in the middle of the session to improve the provision of utility services on campus.
He maintained that the power situation and utility which were part of the students’ demands has not improved considering the present situation in Nigeria.
New Nigerian recalled that University of Ibadan was shut early last month following protests by the students against the suspension of a union leader by the students’ disciplinary committee and non-availability of some amenities needed on the campus like power and water which they said had made learning difficult for them, forcing the Institution’s authorities to close down the institution indefinitely.
