Over 3.6 million children have so far been treated of malnourishment in Kano State since 2010 under the Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) programme being funded by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
This was disclosed on Thursday by Hajiya Halima Musa, the Nutrition Officer, Kano State Ministry of Health, at Sharada Primary Health Center, Kano, when a team of media executives made a field trip to the CMAM centre, organized by UNICEF.
The trip was meant to acquaint journalists drawn from various states across the country on the level of child malnutrition and its control in Nigeria, using Kano state as reference.
According to her, 30 centers for the treatment of malnutrition have been opened in six selected local governments of the state.
Hajiya Halima also revealed that in 2015 alone, 103, 376 malnourished children were treated across the centres.
She added that 5, 744 patients were admitted, with nine deaths recorded during the period.
She also said that 1, 617 patients had recovered, while some 272 of those discharged defaulted in their treatment schedules.
Hajiya Halima explained that, each center attends to an average of about 120 to 140 patients daily.
She further said that, Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RTUF), being supplied by UNICEF is being given to malnourished children free of charge.
She called for the expansion of the treatment centres to at least 22 local government areas across the state, for effective management of the condition.
She therefore urged the relevant stakeholders to provide enough manpower for effective service delivery.
