United Nations Children’s Funds, UNICEF, Kaduna Field Office, Staff Association on Friday pledged to rehabilitate the water facility in Kaduna State Special Education School which has broken down for sometimes now.
Utpal Moitra, Chief of field office made this known in his remarks when the staff community visited the school to present the pupils with food and gift items as part of activities to mark their end of year events and the 70th anniversary of UNICEF’s existence.
Represented by Theresa Pamma, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Specialist, the chief said, UNICEF stands for children and that the bulk of their work is all about children.
“We are also celebrating 70th year of UNICEF. We stand for children and the bulk of our work is to promote the right of children to give them a sense of belonging in the society.
“UNICEF exists in about 146 Counties of the world. Apart from supporting the rights of children, we also help the children to reach their full potentials. UNICEF has programmes all day long towards fulfilling those rights.
“So we are here to celebrate with the children of this school to wind up activities for year and to give them a sense of belonging as they prepare to go on their holiday.
“And when we got here we discovered that their borehole has not been working for sometimes now, so we are taking it upon ourselves as staff community to rehabilitate it with immediate effect.” He added.
Responding, Hajia Salamatu Shuaib, Principal of the school, expressed gratitude to UNICEF for the kind gesture, saying, “Honestly, I’m overwhelmed with the coming of UNICEF to identify and associate with these special children by a way of putting some smiles on their faces through get-together.
“Their coming at this time is significant because they have just finished their examinations, by the time they will be resuming, their borehole would have been working.
“We commend UNICEF for their choice to come here and have fun with these children during this yuletide season for the get together.”
“They have also looked into some trivial challenges we have in the school and they have to repair our borehole which has broken down for sometime now. That has put an end to the children going outside the school premises in search of water.
Isiaka Isa Ma’aji, an Instructor with Kaduna State Rehabilitation Centre who himself is living with disability, inspired the students to take their education seriously.
He used himself as a case study saying, “despite the fact that I am physically challenged, i was able to acquire qualitative education which has helped me to be doing well in my business instead of resolving to begging for alms in the streets.
“Take up the challenge and don’t fill inferior anywhere you found yourselves. We have a problem at hand already. Beggars are more visible in the main and back streets in Northern Nigeria. We have more beggars here because of their parents’ inability to get them educated.
“Begging for N5, N10 arms cannot solve their problem or rake them anywhere, but education can help you do better in your skills. I’m doing well in my business and I believe anyone of you can,” he stressed.
