UNICEF donates items worth N400, 000 to orphanages in Kaduna

Members of staff of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Kaduna Office, has donated food items worth N400, 000 to orphanages in Kaduna as part of activity to mark the 2015 end of year celebration.
The donations which began with Jam’iyar Matan Arewa (JMA) Orphanage Home, would be concluded with a similar donation to Adonai Orphanage Home, all in Kaduna.
Presenting the items, UNICEF’s Kaduna Field Office’s Media and External Relations Officer, Rabiu Musa explained that the gesture was part of the staff members contribution in bringing succour to orphans and vulnerable children in the society.
Musa explained that usually the staff members contribute money at the end of every year to organize a get-together-party after a year of tedious but result-oriented work.
“But this year, we decided to change the tradition to impact on the lives of those children who need help the most.
“Instead of organizing a party to enjoy ourselves, we decided to pool our resources together and reach out to the less privilege in the society, particularly orphans and vulnerable children, “he said.
He listed the items to include rice, sugar, milk, indomie, cooking oil and other beverages.
On his part, UNICEF’s Chief, Kaduna Field Office, Mr Utpal Moitra said, “As UNICEF, we would continue to work towards closing disparities, gaps and inequalities among children, especially the marginalized and those in difficult circumstances such as those in orphanages”.
Receiving the items, the Coordinator of the JMA Orphanage Home, Hajiya Maryam Tahir, thanked the UNICEF staff for the gesture.
Tahir, who was represented by the Principal of JMA Premier Secondary School, Haruna Umar, said the donation would go a long way in ensuring end of year fun for the orphans.
She explained that the orphanage, established in 1965 currently has six orphans, adding that so far, over 3,000 have passed through the orphanage.
UNICEF also organized career talks as well as discussions on HIV/AIDS particularly on how to stay HIV-free for students of JMA Premier Secondary School and Rare Gem Academy.
UNICEF in collaboration with Fifth Chukker Polo and Country Club Kaduna also donated 46 teddy ponies to vulnerable children of Al-Ihsan Charity Organization Children’s Home.
The Coordinator of the home, Hauwa’u Salisu who thanked UNICEF for the gesture, explained that the home currently has 76 children made up of orphans, rejected, abandoned and less privileged children.
