Umudike; ASUU urges Buhari, NUC to save University from VC
By; Tina Phineas, Yola.
President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Universities Commission NUC have been called upon to safe the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State from the maladministration and destructive activities of the Vice Chancellor Professor Hilary Edogha.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU Yola Zonal Chapter made the appeal at a Press Conference in Yola condemning the impunity and abuse of power by  Edogha.
Zonal Coordinator of the union Dr. Augustine Ndaghu stated that the press conference was conducted simultaneously across the country to bring to the fore the scandalous and destructive activities of the Vice Chancellor, which if not checked can cause the degradation of education in the institution.
“It is pertinent to note that the Vice Chancellor of Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture Umodike is busy running the university in a self-styled manner as if it were his personal estate.
“The VC has no regards for established organs of the university like the Council, the Senate and the congregation among others whose powers the sole administrator usurped to himself.” the union decried.
The zonal Coordinator added that the union has enough proofs, indicting the embattled VC of promoting over 30 unqualified individuals to the rank of Professors without recourse to experience.
“The Vice Chancellor has turned professorial appointment into a village chieftaincy title which is given to the highest bidder.
“You will be surprised that people who have spent less than 6 years in the university, were appointed Professors,” he added.
The union also accused the VC of settling his loyalists with TETFUND sponsorship through attending multiple conferences around the globe.
“The amount approved for such trips or training depends on ones proximity to the VC,”
ASUU therefore called on the visitor to the university as well as EFCC, ICPC to intervene and save the institution from the clutches of the VC before it is too late.
