The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr Deji Omole Sunday said a female member of the union Dr Beatrice Fabunmi has been kidnapped‎.
Dr Omole in a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan stated that Dr Fabunmi Kenneth Dike of the University of Ibadan was reportedly kidnapped at Oba-Akoko in Ondo State on her way to see her mother at Ibilo last Friday.
The ASUU Chairman declared that while Dr Fabunmi was kidnapped, her husband Professor Martins Fabunmi was released after ‎sustaining gunshot wounds adding that the kidnappers are demanding ‎N5million before Dr Mrs Beatrice Fabunmi can be released.
According to the ASUU Chairman, President Buhari must talk to the security agencies to ensure the release of the kidnapped female lecturer within 24hours and that the Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase should ensure the unconditional release of Dr Beatrice Fabunmi.
Describing the kidnapping of the female lecturer as uncalled for, he urged the IGP to deploy the anti-kidnapping squad to ensure that Dr Beatrice is release unhurt.
“Where will ordinary Nigerians pass that they will be safe? Our roads are death traps and since we cannot afford the airfare, we endure the hardship only for us to be kidnapped again! This is evil and must be stopped. The inspector General of Police needs to track down those kidnapping kingpin in Ondo state and other adjourning states. We in ASUU are demanding the unconditional release and safe return of one of our own. The state must guarantee the security of its members. President Buhari must talk to the security agencies to ensure the release of our member within 24hours.”
While stating that although the case has been reported to the Police, he alleged that the case was not being treated with the utmost attention it deserves, saying,”if big men or their children are kidnapped, all the newspapers will be awash with the news getting front page but when the poor man is kidnapped, he becomes another victim in the hands of law enforcement agents”.
“The Minister of Interior Abdulrahman Dambazzau should step up his acts and check this insecurity and not force Nigerians to rise in self defence if their security cannot be guaranteed by the state”
