A legal luminary, Victor Iyanam has advocated the constitution of a body to be known as Truth and Reconciliation Commission to address the various ethnic and religious crises in the country
Iyanam, who is the Akwa Ibom state former attorney-general and commissioner for justice, while speaking with newsmen in Uyo said that the setting up of the commission remained a panacea for national peace.
“We have crisis in the North, West, East, Middle Belt and the Niger Delta, we have crisis everywhere so we need a Truth and Reconciliation Commission so that every aggrieved Nigerian would take part”, Barrister Iyanam stated.
He advised the federal government not to approach peaceful resolution in the various regions in segments but should be an all embracing dialogue for the purpose of lasting national peace, especially now that the country is facing economic recession.
According to him, “the militant groups in Niger Delta region are aggrieved party and they would have something to say. They need to present their memorandum through their leaders to the commission for discussion and resolutions”, he said
“Other aggrieved groups in the country will send their grievances to the commission through their leaders or representatives which will closely look into their presentations and advised government on the way out of the potential crisis situation”, the legal luminary stressed.
The Niger Delta militants, he noted, “will always talk about environmental issues which are their legitimate issue to talk about. They go under the cover of environmental issues and do all manner of atrocities while ordinarily they are doing bunkering activities’’.
Iyanam also expressed optimism that the federal governments would address the complaint of Fulani Herdsmen attacks at the commission if established.
It would be noted that if the commission is instituted, the age-long lingering communal crisis that currently rock the peace coexistence between Oku Iboko community in Itu local government area, Akwa Ibom and Ikot Offiong in Onukpani local government area of Cross River states will be put to an end if such a commission is established.
At as this week, four persons have been reported dead and several property destroyed as a result of the clash.
