Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Community Relations, Alhaji Abidemi Siyanbade has hinted that Oyo state government has ordered arrest of students found roaming the streets during school hours.
Alhaji Siyanbade who is also the leader of the state’s enforcement team on truancy dropped this hint in Ibadan while speaking with newsmen on the Tuesday’s arrest of 8 secondary school students by the team.
He said the arrested students are presently in the custody of the State Social Development Centre, Samonda for counselling where their parents and principals are to show up for their release.
“Just last June, the state government came up with an initiative targeted at repositioning the education sector of the state. This initiative evolved the newly inaugurated School Governing Board (SGB) across the 628 secondary schools in state. Imagine the students being tagged ‘Olu-Igbo’ because they are always in the bush when others are in class”he said.
Alhaji Siyanbade gave details of the students arrested by the team as students of Methodist Grammar School, Bodija; Bishop Onabanjo Memorial Grammar School, Bodija and St Luke Grammar School, Molete and were taken to the Oyo State Social Development Centre, Samonda for counselling.
He disclosed that the clampdown will be a continuous exercise as there will be no room for roaming of streets in and across Oyo state by the student during school hours when they are expected to be in the classrooms.
Also speaking,Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Ajimobi on Community Relations, Mrs Adekemi Opatunde asked all stakeholders to join hands with the state government in eradicating truancy in schools across the state, saying the exercise was to oversee the welfare of the students.
“It is painful to see students roaming the street when they are suppose to be in school. I am sure we have made a point with this exercise,” she said.
