As schools in Kaduna State joined their counterparts across the country to mark this year’s Children’s Day celebration, parents, stakeholders and children paid glowing tributes to the late Herbert Wigwe.
They also used the occasion to call on parents to enroll their children in schools in order to make them productive and better adults in the future.
Speaking at an event organized by Access Bank, UNICEF and Fifth Chukker Polo and Country Club Kangimi and held at the Access Bank/Fifth Chukker Model Primary School Kangimi Resort Kaduna, a staff of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria Professor Aisha Maude Sulaiman and the National President of Jamiyar Matan Arewa, Hajiya Rabi Saulawa as well as the representative of Fifth Chukker, Mrs Biodun emphasized the importance of educating every child irrespective of gender.
They identified rape, drug abuse and insecurity as a major impediment towards the education of children in Northern Nigeria.
They however, commended Alhaji Adamu Attah and late Herbert Wigwe for their role and foresight in helping towards reducing the number of out of school children in Nigeria.
“It is important we understand that every child is a gift from God, we must encourage the education of our girls because educating a girl child is like educating a nation”. Professor Maude said.
“Herbert Wigwe and Adamu Attah have done their part, I call on all parents and other well to do individuals in the society to emulate them,” Mrs Biodun said.
The representatives of UNICEF, Access Bank and the Education Secretary of Igabi Local Government Area as well as the Village Head of Katabu all called on parents to ensure they monitor the activities of their wards, both at home and in schools in order to ensure they are properly educated.
Highpoint of the occasion included, quiz competition, a song, dance and drama tribute to late Herbert Wigwe, among others.
