The Country Director, Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPFN), Rev John Joseph Hayab has called on Nigerian parents to rise up to their responsibilities of training their children as responsible future leaders to correct the present security challenges Nigeria is experiencing.

Speaking in Kaduna on Saturday as a guest speaker on the occasion of the first trade fair and exhibition of products and services of Borstal Training Institution, Rev Hayab noted that parents have a responsibility to impact positively on the lives of the young ones in order to bring God fearing  people that would carry on with good moral towards ensuring a peaceful and united nation that will ensure conducive environment for all.

The GPFN Country Director who spoke on “Parenting style and modern society” observed that parents should give more time to their children by ensuring they impact good morals that will guide to acquire both formal and informal education that will make them live a better people and in a harmonious relationship.

He lamented, “Parents focus more attention in giving their children modern education with little or no attention given to the moral upbringing of the children. Parents should rather be more concern with ensuring that their children are trained to be responsible in their conduct towards relating well with one another.”

He decried a situation where parents are more busy with their activities, leaving the children to watch programmes that have negative effects on their upbringing, saying that with the present insecurity in the country, parents should ensure they give more time in giving the best training to their children.

According to Rev Hayab who is also the Kaduna State Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), borstal institution came to being because both parents and society have failed to inculcate the right discipline in the lives of the young ones, giving way for the children to indulge themselves to behaviours that are inimical to societal norms and values.

Professor Yahaya Mujahid of the Department of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, attributed most of the present challenges in the country to people’s misconception of what they should do in life for the overall development of Nigeria.

Dr. James Yakubu Gowon opined that parents should give more time to the upbringing of their children in order to give them the best training in life.

The Principal, Borstal Training Institution, Kaduna, Controller Correction, Musa Dauda Doguwa, called on parents and well spirited individual to make their children great, saying that government can not do it alone.

He solicited for the unalloyed support and cooperation of stakeholders towards the effective reformation and rehabilitation of the children in the institution and their eventual reintegration back to the society.
