In what smack of a military ambush, former military governor of Kano State, Colonel Sani Bello (rtd) was beaten to his game yesterday when the Sarkin Sudan, Alhaji Saidu Namaska surprisingly conferred and turbanned him Sarkin Malami and Haske Kontagora.
The former military leader who had rejected many of such chieftaincy titles in the past, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Niger State Governor and son of the retired Colonel, Jibrin Baba Ndace was caught unawares when the royal father announced the new titles and directed Sani Bello to step out to be turbaned to the constellation of all in attendance.
All these took place during a ceremony organised by Kontagora Emirate Community and Youth Development Association (KEYODA) to confer a community service award on Col. Sani Bello in Kontagora.
The royal father who had eulogised the community and public spirited efforts of the former military leader noted that the entire Emirate is indebted to the magnanimity of Col. Sani Bello, whose phlantrophy spanned across many human endeavours over the years.
“I know of many offers of chieftaincy titles that Col. Sani Bello have turned down but today he has no option than to accept the honour the entire Emirate confers on him. I hereby call on Col. Sani Bello to step out and be turbaned here with immediate effect,” the monarch decreed.
Shocked by the royal father’s pronouncement, Col.Sani  Bello who was originally slated only for KEYODA’s award was ushered out for the turbanning which was supervised by both the Sarkin Sudan and the Sarkin Zauzau Suleja, Malam Awwal Ibrahim.
Niger State governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, who is the first son of the recipient, was so elated by the honour done his father and called on other blessed individuals to emulate the spirit of giving back to the society.
“Today’s honour has shown that it is good to be good to your people. Government alone cannot meet the societal needs. Those that Allah has blessed among us should rise to complement government effort at all times,” the elated governor advised.
Earlier the Sarkin Zauzau who was the first executive governor of Niger State and the chairman of the occasion was full of praises to the heart of love, care and concern by the recipient. According to the royal father, “I benefited from the kind spirit of Col. Sani Bello. Whatever modest achievement we have recorded today has the hand writing of Col. Sani Bello in it”.
In his address the national chairman of KEYODA, Comrade Sai’du Ibrahim said the philanthropic gesture of the former military leader pre-date the birth of his generation and noted that the octogenarian has not abated in his doing good.
Expressing his gratitude, the recipient said he was taken by surprise by Sarkin Sudan with the Chieftaincy title, which he said he had to accept despite rejecting some in the past.
Having accepted this, the Sarkin Malami publicly said he may not be too keen for more titles in future, advising who may be planning to confer him with such honour to drop the idea.
“I have been avoiding this (title). I am a Colonel, an Ambassador, Alhaji and now this, I think I have had enough. You know I grudgingly accepted this and I am very grateful to my people,” Col. Sani Bello state.
The ceremony also witnessed the empowerment of some widows by the 20 year old association.
