A three year old boy and three adults have reportedly died in a ghastly motor accident which occurred yesterday on the Kara Bridge along Lagos Ibadan Express Way involving a 20ft containerized truck which plunged into Isheri Olofin river.
It was gathered that the adults, which identities remained unknown as at time of filing the report, were occupants of the truck.
There bodies were said to have been recovered from the head of the truck that plunged into the river after it was recovered with heavy duty equipment crane with support from local divers.
According to witness, the mother of the deceased boy, who was with him on a motorbike when the accident occurred also had a leg fracture.
The witness informed that the woman was immediately rushed to an unidentified hospital for medical attention, while the deceased were deposited in the mortuary by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Our correspondent gathered that the accident occurred when the head of the articulated vehicle suddenly detached from its body while on motion inward Kara bridge and rammed into a motorcycle conveying two passengers and a rider, while the head of the truck plunged into the river.
The General Manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Bayo Tiamiyu who confirmed the incident in a release said the agency received the report of the accident through a distress call and swiftly rushed to the scene.
The statement reads, “The Agency received a distress call through the emergency toll free number 112/767 today Wednesday 31st January, 2018 at about 8.45 a.m concerning an accident on Kara Bridge Lagos Ibadan Express Way. On arrival at the scene, the LASEMA Response Team gathered that a 20ft containerized truck with unknown plate number was involved in accident.
Further investigation revealed that the head of the containerized truck detached from it body while on motion inward Karra bridge and rammed into a motorcycle with the rider and two passengers while the head of the truck plunged into Isheri Olofi River. Unfortunately, a three year old boy on the motorcycle lost his life while his mother had leg fracture and they have been moved to the hospital by FRSC”.
It added that ” The head of the truck that plunged into the river was however recovered from the river with the aid of the heavy duty equipment Crane with support from the local divers. Subsequently, three adult male were extricated and recovered from the truck head and handed over to FRSC officials who moved them down to the morgue.
Other Agencies on ground includes the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos State Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Police Force from Ojodu Abiodun and Isheri Police Division and OP Mesa”
Tiamiyu also said that proper investigation would be conducted on the incident, he however advised motorist, especially articulated truck drivers to always drive within the and ensure they adherence with road safety regulations”.
