Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Civil Liberty Organisation (CLO) in Plateau State yesterday picket the Jos Electricity Distribution Company in Jos North and Pankshin Local Government Areas of the state over increase in tariff charges.
State NLC Chairman, Jibril Banchir who was accompanied by the TUC Secretary Ade Tokumbo and representative of the CSO’s Aluko Daniel Steve told the gathering that the Electricity Distribution Companies had agreed during the privatisation that the company will not review its price within the first 18 months without consultative meeting.
Banchir said it was unacceptable for the electricity companies to increase tariff adding that “we are not saying no to certain actions but they must be done according to the dictates of the law where every body’s interest must be considered for the progress of this country.”
TUC Secretary Ade Tokumbo stressed that meters must be made available to all consumers to avoid over billing adding that “the electricity Distribution Companies must adequately supply power to Nigerians 24 hours uninterrupted and their billing must conform with the dictates that is obtainable internationally by providing a readable meter to know the number of consumption each and every one of us consume within a reasonable time because anything short of that will not be acceptable.”
