SWAN @53: C/River Chapter Seeks Renewed Interest In Sports For Development

Cross River State Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, (SWAN) Comrade Albert Andinam  has called for a renewed interest in sports development by individuals, corporate organisations and relevant stakeholders in Nigeria.
He made the call in a statement jointly signed with the State Secretary, Dianabasi Effiong, on Wednesday to mark the 53rd anniversary of the association.
He called on government at states and local government level to take sports seriously to generate employment, curb youth restiveness.
It stated that sports remained veritable tools in promoting healthy living standards, image branding, public relations and reputation management for those who value them.
It appealed to the Cross River State Government to be more proactive in sports development and make concise efforts to harness talents from state’s Comprehensive Sports Development policy.
“By so doing it will better to groom them onshore than acquiring them offshore (poaching); the state can also effectively harness her potentials toward sports development.
“Sports is a unifying factor, a money-spinning venture and a tool for tourism and infrastructural development. We can deliberately plan towards these by developing sports.’’ it stated.
The association also called for the restoration of the National sports commission, adding that the commission has been the brain behind sports development and excellence at the national level.
According to the statement made available to NN sports , Andinam stressed the need to create an enduring platform for the growth and development of sports in Nigeria.
The statement also lauded the leadership of SWAN under its President, Honour Sirawoo, adding that SWAN under his leadership was becoming stronger, responsive and securing the trust and confidence of critical stakeholders.
It stated that the current leadership of SWAN had constructively promoted sports development and in regulating as well as coordinating the activities of members.
The association also expressed the hope that Nigeria would continue to do well in sports at the local, states, national and global levels.
They assured members’ desire and determination to support sports development in line with SWAN statutes, the National Sports Policy and global best practices.
