Suspected kidnappers attack former UI VC Bamiro in Ibadan …shot him in the leg

Suspected kidnappers on Tuesday night attacked a former Vice-Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Professor Olufemi Bamiro around ring road cum Oluyole area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
New Nigerian learnt that the suspected armed kidnappers during the attack shot Professor Bamiro on the leg.
It was gathered that the yet to be identified gunmen reportedly tracked down Professor Bamiro at about 7:00 pm while he was said to be driving home.
The gunmen were said to have waylaid Professor Bamiro, captured him and shot him on the leg before driving him away but ran out of luck when the former VC’s vehicle suddenly went off due to the security device installed in it.
Speaking on the attack, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Oyo State, Mr Adekunle Ajisebutu said the attack was a case of failed kidnap attempt.
DSP Ajisebutu declared that the suspected kidnappers were trying to kidnap Professor Bamiro when policemen came to the scene and foil the attempt and rescued him while the gunmen escaped.
The PPRO added that the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Sam Adegbuyi, has already instructed men of the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to commence investigation of the incident and also ordered the anti-kidnapping squad to be on the trail of the suspected kidnappers.
Also, the University of Ibadan, Director of Communication, Mr Olatunji Oladejo declared that the University of Ibadan Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Gbemisola Oke, and the Registrar, Olujinmi Olukoya, had visited the shot former VC at the UCH, saying, “I can confirm to you that our former Vice-chancellor, Prof. Bamiro, was shot on Tuesday night”.
“There is no detail of the shooting for now. The school’s DVC, Academic and Registrar have visited him at UCH on behalf of the school. What I can say further is that we are thankful to God that he is responding to treatment” he said.
Mr Oladejo stressed further that the University of Ibadan management are in “touch with the hospital management whom we trust to offer the best treatment to the former VC.”
As at the time of sending this report, Professor Bamiro was said to be responding to treatment at the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was rushed to for treatment.
