Authorities of University of Ibadan on Tuesday closed down the institution indefinitely amidst two days protests by students of the Institution.
Our Correspondent gathered that the protest started on Monday with students leaders from Zone ‘D’ NANS joined by other students from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan, Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo and two former student union presidents in the institution on the rustication of a 500 level student of Department of Petroleum Engineering, Mr. Tunji Epeti Michael.
The protest took a new twist Tuesdayday when the protesting students reportedly forced their way into the campus in several buses chanting songs to condemn the suspension of the 500 level student by the Student Disciplinary Committee over protest on lack of power and water in the University campus.
The protesting students were said to have chased off students met in lecture rooms with canes while all the main and other entrances and roads within the university community were put under lock and key and barricaded by the students to prevent vehicular movement into and outside the campus.
Sensing that the protest was going out of hand, the University Vice Chancellor Professor Abel Olayinka ordered indefinite closure of the Institution, saying the decision to close the school was painful but that the authorities cannot be watching the violent protests which had led to a life-threatening acts and text messages with some students covering their faces during the protest.
Professor Olayinka asked all the students to vacate the campus by 4pm latest Tuesday or be expelled from the University if found on campus after the expiration of the ultimatum, saying, “threats of violence against law abiding students cannot be condoned”.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the Students Union Government were sighted addressing the students not to leave the school premises with some of them blocking passage of vehicles at the Sultan Bello Hall and other halls within the university.
