The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji on Thursday tasked the Federal Government to strengthen the laws against piracy to rid Nigeria of illegal activities.
Oba Adetunji made the call in his Popoyemoja palace in Ibadan while receiving members of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), led by Chief Tony Okoroji and Aishat Allen.
The royal father described piracy as an act of economic sabotage and rape on creative business which deserves more stringent penalty than it presently carries, hence the need for it to be curb on time to prevent the illegal business from thriving in Nigeria.
Emphasizing that piracy is a universal phenomenon which cut across borders, Oba Adetunji lamented that despite the current onslaught on piracy, the illegal business seemingly appeared to be flourishing, rather than abating.
Oba Adetunji while recalling how some of the artistes on his music label suffered in the hands of pirates, declared that the time was now ripe to strengthen the laws against piracy to reduce the illegal activities of the pirates to the barest minimum, saying, “a situation where pirates are reaping where they did not sow is unacceptable”.
Leader of the COSON team, Chief Tony Okoroji in his remark said the team members were in Ibadan for the stakeholders meeting, adding that coutesy demanded that they should first of all visit the monarch before doing anything in Ibadan
Chief Okoroji however solicited the co-operation and support of the Olubadan in his society’s effort to discover new talents and promote them to stardom at a time when diversification of the nation’s economy has become very necessary as a stakeholder in the Copyright Society of Nigeria, COSON.
