The National President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, (NULGE), Comrade Ambali  Olatunji has declared that state governors opposing local government autonomy in Nigeria are not fit to lead.
Speaking with journalists on Saturday at the venue of the Conference of Nigeria State of Assembly Speakers at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Comrade Olatunji asked Nigerians to vote out state governor that are  against local government autonomy.
Comrade Olatunji stressed that the autonomy for local government in Nigeria would allow connection between the government and the people, give hope to youth and women through skills acquisition programme.
” Nigerians are watching them, 2023 is around the corner, we want to tell Nigerians, any governor that opposes local government autonomy should be voted out of office, Nigerians should go out en-mass and vote any Governor who opposed local government autonomy out of power come 2023 because they are not qualified to lead Nigerians”, he said .
Comrade Olatunji added, ” we are appealing to the people that any governor that is against the local government autonomy should be voted out of office. We have realised that those making side comments are doing it as self-serving and not in the patriotic interest of their people”.
The NULGE President maintained that federal government allocation and internally generated revenue were enough to sustain local governments, saying, “allocation from the Federal Government is enough for us to sustain the local government, we are not even talking about those burden put on us by those various state governments, that the local government should fully fund primary education which should be the statutory role of the government.
“Our belief is that if all governors allow local government to handle their allocation fully, they will be able to pay salaries and also be able to do infrastructural development in Nigeria and with this we will be able to address the cause of insecurity, would be able to give good governance to our people, we would be able to be more closer to the people, we would be able to also give hope to the youths and also to the women.
Kicking against Governor Seyi Makinde’s position in his keynote address, that local governments would not be sustainable if granted autonomy, saying, local governments in the country could pay salary, construct infrastructures, tackle insecurity and give good governance to the people, if allowed to earn their allocations.
” For Governor Makinde who we all believe is a progressive man to have said that the issue of local government autonomy is not sustainable that means  the Governor is not sincere, his statement is a half-truth.”
He emphasized that security challenges were local, and that local governments should be allowed to provide security and safety in rural communities.
Commenting on the presence of NULGE leaders at the venue of the meeting, the NULGE National President said  they are in Ibadan to address the Speakers to enable them to understand that their agitations was nothing, but a patriotic duty.
” We are also going to engage the Speakers of Houses of Assembly to let them know that this is a patriotic duty, Nigerians are watching them, 2023 is around the corner, we want to tell Nigerians, any governor that opposes local government autonomy should be voted out of office, Nigerians should go out en-mass and vote any Governor who opposed local government autonomy out of power come 2023 because they are not qualified to lead Nigerians.”
