Determined to ensure fake products become non-existent in Nigerian markets, no fewer than 33 shops have been sealed-off in different parts of Ekiti State in a mass raid carried out by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).
Ekiti State Director of the agency, Mrs. Toyin Idowu disclosed this Thursday in a statement in Ado-Ekiti that items worth over N2.5M suspected to be substandard were also seized from sellers.
She listed some of the seized items to include substandard cables, tyres, electronics, gas cylinders among others.
She said the raid was carried out simultaneously in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, Omuo-Ekiti, Ifaki-Ekiti, Oye-Ekiti, Ode-Ekiti and Ikole-Ekiti while the exercise continues in other towns next week under its “Zero Tolerance to Sub-Standard Products”.
According to her, the raid exercise was ordered by the Director-General of the agency, Dr. Paul Angya especially on tyres following incessant cases of tyre-induced road accidents in the country.
She said it was the believe of the agency that most of the tyres currently on sale in the open markets were either second hand, expired or sub-standard.
The Director stated that apart from confiscating the items, their owners would still be made to pay fines, including paying for the cost of transportation and destruction.
She explained that the punitive measures were designed to discourage others from selling fake or sub-standard products to members of the public.
Idowu said the agency would not stop the renewed ‘war’ until the country was free from distribution, purchase and use of substandard products, and avert the loss of lives and property.
