Former Minister of Education Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has expressed worried over the level of increase in broken homes especially among the Muslim community.
He stated this at the opening of 16th Annual Judges Conference, organized by the Centre For Islamic Legal Study (CILS) held at the Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Kongo campus, Zaria.
Speaking at the conference with the theme “Judgement and Execution of Judgement in Sharia and Area Courts in Nigeria” he said broken homes mostly lead to the increase in social vices in the society which is unhealthy to the wellbeing of the nation.
On the fight against corruption, Malam Shekarau said he is supporting President Buhari’s on going anti-corruption moves.
“I am not in support of corruption in any form but I am for anti-corruption with a view to fighting all forms of cheats and I will be ready to support anybody who is out to fight such.
“Kano state was the first to established  Anti-Corruption and Public Complain Commission in 2003 when I was a  Governor, go and check so that you can see what we have done there,” he noted.
Shekarau said there was the need for courts to take into cognisance the cause of moral decadence amongst the citizens.
He said our courts need to take into cognisance what brought about moral decadence, thuggery and all other forms of immoral behaviours and social vices among the people.
In his message, the ABU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Garba said the essence of the conference was to add value to what was obtainable in the Sharia courts.
The V-C, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Evans Amans charged the centre to advance the course of Islamic legal system for the benefit of all.
Earlier, the Director of the Institute of Administration, Prof. Mohammed Tukur-Usman had advocated for the harmonisation of courts in Northern Nigeria in order to have a harmonised penal code.
He, however, described the conference as one of the vibrant programmes in the promotion of Sharia legal system in Northern Nigeria.
The director said the centre was supposed to be self-funded by attracting partnership from donor organisations instead of relying solely on the university.
He said the conference will focus on judgements and how they are enforced especially at the lower courts.
