Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial Zone, Shehu Sani, has, donated books worth over N10million to National Library, Kaduna and Kaduna State University (KASU).
According to Senator Sani, the donation was the first phase of $100,000 he planned to donate to schools in his constituency within four years, saying that the donation became necessary owing to the fact that the education sector of Nigerian economy has suffered neglect in recent times.
While making the presentation at National Library, Kaduna, the senator said, “We have a duty as elected representative of our people. We need to take education seriously. Those who have passion to learn and those who want to research must be encouraged. You are what you read and if you don’t read what is new, your thought and vision become obsolete.
“Library in nigeria has for a long time been neglected. A library is a temple of learning where you come and get updated knowledge.
“I have spent about 30,000 dollars on these books. Few are available within the country why others were brought from outside. It is important to add that given back to library is given back to institution that belongs to all of us.
“I want to encourage the library managers to take proper use and custody of the books.
“It is true that we are backward. Our leaders must raise the hope of new generations through provision of enabling environment for them to strive without necessarily experiencing so much difficulty,” added the senator.
He further lamented the rate at which Nigerians seek education abroad, saying over two million young Nigerians are currently schooling outside the country, noting that, “most of these universities depend on Nigeria to survive”.
According to him, “Nigerian Universities and Polytechnics are in the worst situation now. If we cannot have one of our universities making the list of 1,000 universities in the world, it is a shame”.
He however surmised that he will try and sponsor a bill that will regulate private schools where people are paying as high as 40,000 dollars annually, describing it as “unacceptable”.
Receiving the books, Chief Librarian of National Library, in Kaduna, Muhammed Ndagi, told the gathering that the donation was confirmation and fulfillment of earlier visit by the Senator, “he’s committed to educational improvement of Kaduna, Northern Nigeria and Nigeria as a whole”.
He said,”the Senator is contributing to the uplifting of fallen standard of education in his own constituency. He came around, and we gave him the list as regards latest books. He has boosted the morale of our staff. Recency of the materials will help us to boast of what we have as up-to-date.
“As we all known, library is a living-working-encyclopedia. The selection we have made are based on current need of users including politicians, government functionaries, educations and students”.
