A Senator representing Bauchi South district, Senator Ali Wakili has said that the calls by governments for peasant farmers to go to the farm should be marched with incentives for the farmers.
“It is very sad if you look at it, we are urging peole to go to the farms but we are not giving the incentives to go to that farm” he queried.
Senator Ali Wakili, who was fielding questions from journalists in Bauchi, attributed the mess-up in agricultural production particularly in the North to bad governance.
Wakili, while reiterating that agriculture is the mainstay of Nigerian economy, said should the North or Country have responsible leaders, they would not have complained of lack of things to do for the unemployed youths.
He also submitted, “Quite recently you discover that some dry season farmers are running at a lost, they are selling a basket of tomatoes at N300, they are running at a lost, you are not encouraging them”.
Senator Wakili opined that with $100, 000 coupled with good leadership, an individual or government will have cluster of small industries to engage people.
He therefore stressed the need for governments at various levels to provide incentives to farmers towards boosting agricultural production, and food security for the nation.
