The Senate is set to collaborate with the executive arm of government to make the country’s security forces better, efficient and more effective to curtail the current security situation in the country.
This was disclosed by the Senate Leader and the Chairman Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Review of National Security Infrastructure, Senator Ahmad Lawand when he led the 11-man committee on a fact finding mission and condolence visit to Zamfara over the killings in the state.
Lawan who was speaking during a courtesy call on Zamfara State Governor, Alhaji Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar said the country’s security agencies are doing their best despite the many challenges confronting arising from their operations and activities.
“We are facing serious security challenges across the country and it appears that our security forces needs to be better mobilized perhaps even better restructured and funded and this is the essence of setting up this committee,” he said.
He the committee is in the state to listen all shades of opinion from government, traditional rulers and the people with a view to understand how the Senate can work together with the executive arm led by President Muhammad Buhari to make the security forces better and more effective.
He said the visit to Zamfara State is the second by the committee having earlier visited Venue State for same mission.
“We are here to listen more and talk less, so that we get needed information to make a report to the Senate in plenary,” he said.
Responding, governor Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar said his fully committed in supporting the security agencies to end banditry and other forms of criminality in the state.
Yari added that his administration has so far spent over N13 Billion on security since assumption in 2011.
The Senate ad-hoc committee will hold meeting with traditional rulers, security agencies and other stakeholders in the state and also visit Zurmi and Maradun local government areas to have first hand information about the killings in the state.
