*says more teachers required

The Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) of Government Science Secondary School, Kufena, Zaria, has appealed to Kaduna State Government to provide the school with teaching and learning materials as well as the ICT equipment to enable the school meet the global challenges.
They made the appeal during the association’s meeting held at the school on Saturday, emphasizing that more teachers are highly needed, those of English, mathematics and science subjects.
According to the association, despite the state of emergency declared on education by the Kaduna State Government, yet there are areas that needed to be addressed immediately such as providing good teaching and learning materials, security guards and infrastructural development.
Earlier in his speech, the school’s principal, Malam Tanimu Yusuf Usman said, despite the numerous achievements recorded in the school, there are some problems which require intervention of government which includes accumulated electricity bill of over three million Naira (N3,000,000) and with the recent connection of the school with maximum demand meter there is likelihood for the power supply to be disconnected from the school.
Malam Usman also mentioned that inadequate toilets and students furniture, inadequate computers and the need for additional security guards as only one security man is on the government’s payroll.
The principal urged parents to be paying regular visit to know the performance of their children and the school while advising the parents not to visit the school during classes or late evening hours.
He highlighted some of the achievements recorded in the school which includes purchase of television set, public address system, purchase of 10 plastic chairs for the staff, purchase of a printer and a photocopier worth N350,000 among others.
On the part of government, he said it awarded contract for the renovation of the burnt Crowther and Johnson, supply of sporting equipment, provision of the science reagents and equipment.
Also government has supplied 100 double bunks and 200 pieces of mattresses, five science teachers were posted to the school, as well as two medical staff to man the school’s sick bay.
In an organized competition, Science Secondary School Kufena won trophies at the zonal level and senatorial district level and bronze medal was won at spelling bee and scrabble competition held at the Nigerian Military School (NMS) Zaria.
