In its quest at ensuring elimination of the scourge, the Rotary Club International has spent over seven billion US Dollars in Polio interventions.

This was disclosed By the District Governor, Rotary District 9125, Nnoka Mbanefo Ositadinma at the District Family of Rotary Celebration 2017/2018 held at the Catholic Media Centre, Kaduna on Saturday March 3, 2018.
The District Governor explained that the money was spent all over the world in fighting polio, while adding that Rotary’s intervention is also felt in several other areas.
“Rotary is a humanitarian organisation set up to do service programmes in our society. People who are hungry, we provide food for them, communities that lack healthcare facilities, we provide interventions through medical services and in many other areas, we touch lives,” he explained.
Ositadinma said that contrary to the belief of some, Rotary with its 1.3 million worldwide and 8,000 Nigeria membership is not a secret cult, but a group that attracts like minds from Nigeria’s major religions of Christianity and Islam, united in solving challenges of the downtrodden.
“Rotary is not a cult. It is for everyone who is welcome to join us from all tribes and religions. In Rotary, the Muslim will be drinking his water, while the Christian is drinking his beer. Everybody respects the others way of life,” he added.
He said that the District Family of Rotary Celebration is held annually, where members invite family and friends to celebrate with them in merrymaking and relaxation.
Fielding questions from newsmen, the District Chairperson of the Family of Rotary Celebration, Aisha Ahoiza Ismail, said that part of the celebrations was the presentation of items worth N800,000 to orphanages and empowerment to widows.
“As part of the celebration we have empowerment for widows and donations to orphanages. The celebration is basically a family and friends affair. As you can see we are happy. Children are here, parents are here and we are all having fun,” she said.
She however appealed to Northerners to initiate Rotary in their states, in view of the benefits that would be derived by the downtrodden.
Adonai Orphanage received donation of various food items, gallons of oil, toiletries and other products.
In appreciation, administrator of the orphanage, Mrs Elizabeth Afuwape thanked Rotary for the gesture, while announcing that 12 of the orphanage’s children are currently studying in tertiary institutions.
“We are grateful to Rotary. I am pleased to inform this gathering that the first freezer in our orphanage was donated by Rotary,” she said.
Widows were also presented with sewing machines, while one got a giant refrigerator.
