79 days into their industrial action, workers of the Association of Union of Research Institutes (ASURI) in Kaduna have on Tuesday January 30, 2018, embarked on a peaceful protest to further draw attention to their plight.
The research workers converged on the National Institute of Trypanosomiasis Research (NITR) to voice out on the alleged unfair treatment they were receiving from government.
Addressing the protesters, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Allied Associations (SSAUTHRIAI), NITR  Branch, Comrade Kabir Aliyu Kudan, said that they are compelled to take present actions after failure to resolve issues after meeting with the government 36 times.
He explained that since 2009, they have been clamouring for the government to pay one year arrears of N18,000 minimum wage, owed their members.
“We have also been struggling for research to be well funded, but nothing has been done to show seriousness on the part if the government in respect of that.
“We also appealed to the government to establish a coordinating body for research institutes to be called NARICON,” he said.
According to Kudan, another issue they are protesting against is the retirement age of their members, which they want pegged at 65 like that of tertiary institution lecturers.
Also speaking,  Chairman of ASURI, Afaka Branch, Comrade Lukman Ganiyu said that disparity in salaries of workers of research institutes and their counterparts in tertiary institutions is a burden they want lifted off them.
He said that research institutes can solve many problems plaguing the country, including the herdsmen/farmers crisis, threatening the peace of the entire country.
“We have found out that the herdsmen/farmers clashes are as a result of global warming. With research, we can end this and the entire economy of the country would be better off,” he added.
In his remarks, Chairman of ASURI NITR Branch, Comrade Usman Baba Musa appealed to the government to amend the law establishing TETFUND to make research institutes beneficiaries.
“TETFUND don’t exhaust all their funds. Their funds are only limited to universities and polytechnics researches, a disadvantage to funding researches by institutes that can solve many issues,” he added.
