The Deputy Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Honourable Muhammed Buba Jajere has reaffirmed the commitment of his committee to tackling the challenges bedeviling sports development in Nigeria.
Hon Jajere stated this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
The lawmaker said that as soon as the committee commences work after resumption from recess, they will strategize on how best to get sponsorship for the various sports that Nigeria is known to be good at, adding that by so doing, the issue of funding will be addressed.
He pointed out that if individuals and corporate bodies are encouraged to support the sporting sector, the nation may be a force to reckon with.
“Nigeria’s soccer league is not functioning like the English Premier League, Italian and the Spanish leagues.
“We have identified the issues and very soon, we are going to have meetings with all stakeholders so that we can map out ways to sort things out,” he said.
The legislator also added that sports such as badminton, volleyball, hockey and others would be looked into by the Sports Committee of the House of Representatives, with a view of reviving holistically the sports sector of the country.
