Rainstorm has wrecked havoc, destroying over 300 houses and rendering thousands of people homeless in Garga District of Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The rainstorm has also destroyed farms, food already stored and other property worth  millions of Naira.

Executive Chairman of Kanam Local Government Council, Dr. Dayyabu Yusuf Garga said the disaster which befell his people is one too much for them to bear as they are mostly peasant farmers.

Speaking through the Local Government’s Supervisory Councilor for Social Services, Hon Bala Zalli, who was there on the directive of the Executive Chairman, he  said the people of the area have now relocated to sleeping in the available spaces in the primary school located in Garga village as only very few homes were spared in the area.

Narrating their ordeal, some of the affected victims, Malam Rabiu Garga and Alhaji Musa Gambo said the heavy rainstorm came in around 8:30pm on Sunday   October 2, 2022  and did not allow them salvage their goods because of the severity and the only option was to escape with their families to the nearby primary school.

They appealed to government to immediately come to their aid and ameliorate the hardship they have going through to help them bounce back to life within the shortest possible time.

Earlier, Executive Chairman Of Kanam Local Government had given them the assurance that while the local council looks at what support it can render immediately, relevant government authorities such as State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other spirited individuals are being contacted to come to the aid of the people as well.

At the time of filing this report, the people had already deserted Garga village, while some have sought shelter in neighboring villages majority are in classrooms under harsh weather conditions, waiting for help.
