Students of the Oyo state owned Emmanuel Alayande College of Education in Oyo town on Monday took to the street to protest against introduction of alleged illegal fees and others by the Institution’s management.
New Nigerian gathered that the students during the protest which started early in the day paralyzed academic and other activities in and around the institution campus as they blocked all the major entrances to the College.
During the protest, the students in their hundreds were chanting various songs to condemn and demand immediate reversal of the new fees preventing workers and others from entering the school premises.
The students were said to be kicking against a memo reportedly issued by the College’s management directing the student to pay additional N5, 000 for late registration and other charges for Xray as well as matriculation fees.
Sources said the protesting students were accusing the institution’s management of not being considerate with their plight for introducing the exorbitant fees as tuition fee for the new in takes resulting in payment of additional over N10,000 by the stale students while the new intake were asked to be pay about N30,000 apart from acceptance fees and others.
According to the protesting students, their Union leaders have written several letters to the management of the institution through the office of the Dean of Student Affairs on the need to review the said illegal fees but all to no avail as there was no response from the management.
However, the Public Relations officer of the institution Mrs Alagbe while denying the claims by the students, said the protest was mischievous and suspicious as there was no reason for them to protest. She said the memo was to remind them of the need to perfect their registration and state the terms of acquiring and returning matriculation gown for their matric which is schedule to hold next Thursday .
Mrs Alagbe added that both the management and  the students union leaders have  met and deliberated on the new tuition fee for the new intakes before they were asked to pay new fees and that what “is charge as tuition fee is even ridiculously low compare to other state owned colleges of education”.
