Oyo State Coordinator of the Campaign for Democracy and Workers’ Rights, (CDWR), Comrade Abiodun Bamigboye on Monday said the privatisation of  the power sector in Nigeria, is anti masses.
Comrade Bamigboye stated this while speaking at a protest by residents of Monatan, Iyanan Church, Wakajaye, Awotan, Iwo Road, Lalupon and other neighbouring communities in Ibadan over alleged extortion and erratic power supply to their areas by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC)
The CDWR Coordinator disclosed that it was glaring that the nation’s power sector has failed under the present privatisation arrangements.
“What we are saying is that power sector has failed under privatisation .They promised us that once the power sector is privatised, we will be having stable electricity. But, this is not so”, he said
Comrade Bamigboye added, ” few days ago, we heard that one of the major shareholders in IBEDC is indebted to a bank and AMCON has taken over IBEDC. That means privatisation of the power sector is a fraud”.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of the residents of Monatan, Iyanan Church, Wakajaye, Awotan, Iwo Road, Lalupon and other neighbouring communities in Ibadan stormed the streets and blocked the entrance of IBEDC office  at Monatan area of Ibadan.
The protesters lamented that they have been subjected to erratic supply of electricity as well as  allegedly exploitation arising from  few hours of electricity supply in a month and issuance of outrageous estimated bills to them.
Spokesman for the protesting residents,  Mr. Kunle Aworinde disclosed that the communities  were protesting against erratic supply of electricity, non-supply of prepaid meters and issuance of outrageous estimated bills.
According to Aworinde, the protest was as a result of the failure of IBEDC to listen and attend to their demands despite series of complaints about the erratic supply of electricity for years.
“We are protesting against erratic supply of electricity in our communities. They are billing us outrageously. They are supplying us little electricity and they are bringing outrageous bills. We demanded for prepaid meters but they are not giving us”, he said
” We have been experiencing erratic supply of electricity in Monatan, Iyanan Church, Wakajaye, Iwo Road up to Lalupon”
