Press Council Bill, Major Threat To Nigeria’s Democracy – Makinde

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial aspirant in Oyo state Engineer Seyi Makinde on Tuesday said  attempt by the National Assembly to pass the Press Council Bill will constitute major threat to the nation’s growing democracy.

Engineer Makinde in a  statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan through the Seyi Makinde organisation and signed by Prince Dotun Oyelade maintained that passing the Press Council bill will amount to removing the very tool that feeds democracy.

According to the PDP governorship aspirant, the proposed bill could best be likened  to Decee 4 of 1984, that enabled the public execution of some Nigerians by the military junta.

Lamenting the refusal of the government to implement the Freedom of Information Bill FOI encouraged  the obnoxious anti press freedom bill which must be condemned by all lovers of democracy, Engineer Makinde frowned at the decision of the owner  states  to go through the back door to increase tuition fees at Ladoke Akintola University in spite of what the students have gone through in the past 5 years and lamented that the state .

He stressed that it was unfortunate that LAUTECH has been reduced to glorified Secondary schoosl with de-acreditation of courses that add value to the life of our youths and aid promising future as well as growth and development

While describing  the decision of the owner states on LAUTECH  as insensitive and wicked, Engineer Makinde promised to reverse the decision come May next year and do the needful concerning the long suffering institutions
