The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced the second phase of the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) exercise in twenty-nine states of the country ahead of the 2017 population and housing census.
The Chairman of the commission, Chief Chief Duruiheoma who disclosed this in Abuja in a press conference revealed that a total number of 1,214 staff would be engaged as demarcators in the exercise which would last till March 14.
He said the decision to deploy only staff of the commission for the exercise is to ensure commitment of field staff as well as ensure accountability and non-interferance, assuring that adequate logistics have been put in place for effective deployment of personnel and materials for the exercise.
The NPC boss said the commission had already commenced aggressive sensitization of the populace at the grassroots in the selected LGAs and interpersonal communication with community leaders, even as he solicited for accommodation and security of staff during the exercise.
Describing the exercise as the bedrock on which the entire census architecture stands, the NPC boss said getting it right is not just an option, but an absolute necessity in the quest to deliver to the nation an accurate, reliable and acceptable headcount.
The Chairman further solicited for support from state and local government councils, traditional institutions and communities in terms of access to facilities and areas to be demarcated, adding that the exercise would be the last of its kind by the commission in view of its quality and clear methodology.
