Plateau Lawmakers probe water scarcity in Jos and environs
By; Buhari B. Bello, Jos.
Members of the Plateau State House of Assembly have commenced investigation into reasons behind the scarcity of potable water within Jos metropolis and neighboring communities despite the huge sum of money allegedly spent by the past government on water works.
The legislators directed a standing committee to look into the lingering hardship being face by residents of the state capital due non availability of the life sustaining commodity.
This follows a motion presented at the floor of the House by Hon. Ibrahim Baba Hassan representing Jos North over the issue.
He told the House that people of his Constituency are now subjected to series of hardship as result of scarcity of the essential commodity owing to government failure in the past.
According to him, “children and women now leave their houses as early as 4am searching for drinking water’.
He therefore appealed to the present administration in the state to come to the aid of the people in his constituency in the state capital with immediate effect.
The lawmaker said there is no justification for the scarcity of water in Jos and Bukuru metropolis in view of the huge money spent by successive governments since the return of democracy in the state.
Our correspondent observed that as a result of the perennial shortage being witnessed in the state capital, school children now resume at late hours as they normally go in search of water before reporting to schools.
