Arewa Defence League (ADL) and Joint Action Committee of all the Northern Youth Associations has said the recent change in the price of premium motor spirit (PMS) also known as petrol from N87:00k, N86.50k to N145.00k was greeted with mixed feelings, and wished to as a body, add their voices to those who are of the view that the increase was meant for the good of Nigeria and Nigerians.
In a statement signed by ADL President Murtala Abubakar and JACOM Secretary Moses Onoja, the group called on well meaning individuals to understand with the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in it efforts to fix the damages caused on the oil sector over the years by the previous administrations.
“We are of the belief that the temporary pains occasioned by the increase of petrol are aimed at ensuring its sustained availability which is already yielding result. We noted with satisfaction the position of PENGASAN and NUPENG which expressed support to this historic step, as we call on the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to take a cue on this direction. We therefore, call on Nigerians to bear with this government whose intent and purpose is for the overall good of the country as many of us are already aware.
“Equally, we wish to declare our support to the President over the increase as long as it will guarantee regular and sustainable availability of the product. We believe the increase will in no small measures, check the activities of saboteurs and make room for competitions and efficiency in the sector.
“To cushion the effect of the increase on the masses, we call on the Federal Government to provide palliatives within the shortest possible time”.
