Pension: OYSG approves N880million for arrears of pension

Date:

By; BAYO AKAMO, Ibadan.
Oyo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Bimbo Kolade on Tuesday
hinted that the state government has approved N880million for the payment of pensions of retired Local Government Pensioners in the State.
The Commissioner dropped this hint as the state wing of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) handed down 14-days ultimatum to the Oyo state government within which to settle pension arrears owed its members.
According to Mr Kolade in a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan, the N880milion was approved last Friday 7th October 2016 at the monthly Joint Account Allocation Committee meeting with all the Caretaker chairmen of Local government areas in the state for payment of backlog of pension arrears.
“Facts and figures I have with me from Local Government Staff Pensions Board indicates that Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Friday, 7th October 2016, approved the sum of N880 million for the payment of arrears being owed retired Local Government Primary School teachers and Local Government retirees,” he said.
The Commissioner declared that there was no basis for  the 14-day ultimatum by the state wing of NUP as funds had already been approved for the purpose last week.
saying, the said ultimatum was “mischievous, baseless and unacceptable”.
While assuring Local government retirees of the state government’s commitment to their welfare by ensuring prompt payment of their entitlements urged them to ensure that they attended the ongoing verification exercise being carried out by the Pension’s Board.
It will be recalled that the Oyo state wing of Nigeria Union of Pensioners few days ago handed down 14-days ultimatum to the Oyo state government within which to settle pension arrears owed its members or face the anger of the union.
