In the quest to maintain and sustained peace, the Federal Government has been urged to establish a Peace Management Commission that will liaise with all stakeholders in handling peace issues at all levels across the country.
Head of Administration of Yola South Local Government area of Adamawa State Comrade Muhammed Chibado, made the appeal during a two-day training workshop on Facilitation of Peace and Mediation of Conflict, organized by Infrastructure for Peace, I4P, for Peace Management Organizations, PMOs in Yola.
According to him, such Commission if established would be able to handle conflict issues and find lasting solutions by liaising with Peace Management Organizations, Traditional Institutions, youth Organizations and religious leaders as well as to become a data base for peace.
Speaking to newsmen, Acting Head of Directorate of Defense and Security Studies, Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution, IPCR who is also the Program Coordinator for Infrastructure for Peace Dr. Joseph Ochogwu says, the workshop was in line with the Federal Government’s un-budgetary Provision Program of strengthening peace infrastructure across the nation.
He pointed out that, the workshop which was flagged-off in Yola, Adamawa State capital for the North Eastern zone and Imo State for the South-East also aimed at reinforcing the existing and potential structures of Peace Management Organizations, as well as understanding their problems and challenges on peace building in their various communities in order to address them.
Ochogwu explained that, in an effort towards reactivating and strengthening PMOs, IPCR were able to trained over six hundred Community Peace Volunteers from the three Senatorial Zones of Adamawa state and called on Nigerians to be tolerance and respect traditional institutions as well as leaders in their various communities as peace Managers.
