A founding member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Shehu Musa Gabam has said that unless members respect party’s rules and do the right thing, they should forget bouncing back to power in 2019 general elections.
“You cannot bounce back to power and you shouldn’t think of it if you cannot respect your own rules, it is practically impossible. PDP should stop imagining coming to power in 2019 unless and until we do the right thing”, he said
Gabam, in an interview with newsmen in Bauchi, observed that it was honesty and sincerity that ushered in President Muhammadu Buhari to power, which attributes he said, led to protest votes by PDP loyalists that culminated in the emergence of APC Government.
“For people to think that era had to continue, they must be mentally sick, they need to see the psychiatric doctor. We either have a party that is in compliance with the general definition or the party has to fizzle out, another party has to come in”, Gabam warned.
Alhaji Shehu Gabam, also a Bauchi nominee, one of the states in the North East to which the national chairmanship was zoned to prior to the endorsement of Modu Sherriff, said a party is not a centre for worship; hence nobody could be tied to worship it compulsorily.
Gabam, while reacting to the PDP recent congresses said “You will only be tied to it by conviction in the belief that the right thing will be done. How could people sit down yesterday, give directive that congresses should hold but there was no congress anywhere”.
The Bauchi born PDP juggernaut who noted that it is such moral decadence by the PDP hierarchy that made members in thousands and millions to dump the party, said “I’m ready too to leave it if the rules cannot be corrected”.
Gabam, vividly looking worried with wrangling in the party asserted, “When my father slaughtered the ram of my name, he did not include PDP in it, so it is not compulsory to me, and any party can come in. When we formed PDP nobody knows that it will be called PDP”.
Alhaji Shehu Gabam, who described as impunity the improper nomination of Modu Sherriff for the national chairmanship of the PDP, further observed that it was such kind of impunity that led to the inability of the party to conduct congresses.
“The era of impunity and using your money to get things done is gone. We are in an era of globalization, we must be a digitally oriented party that is conversant with the wishes and aspirations of every PDP member”
Gabam wondered how power has gotten people drunk, making them imbibed rascality and insensitivity to the people which, according to him, led to the defeat of the PDP in 2015 elections.
He regretted that PDP which ruled the country for 16 years was characterized by impunity, lawlessness, rascality and imposition, saying “We have no excuse to say we have not been imposing candidates”.
