The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday declared that the party “is alive and kicking.”
Chairman of the party’s BoT, Senator Walid Jibrin who made the assertion was reacting to insinuation in some quarters that the opposition party which has been lying prostrate owing to multiple intra-party crises was already dead and buried.
Jibrin spoke at his Asokoro residence while inaugurating an 18-member national reconciliation committee set up by the BoT. It has seven days to submit its report.
The committee led by Professor Jerry Gana is expected to reconcile the waring factions in the party to pave way for a rancour-free convention already scheduled for August 17 in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The leadership crises in the party had escalated following the emergence of former Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, as chairman of the national caretaker committee.
Jibrin said as the conscience of the PDP, the BoT trusted in the ability of members of the committee drawn largerly from within its ranks to restore peace in the party.
He said: “BoT decided to form a special committee with a view to solving the party’s crisis. We should not allow PDP to die at all. We are out to sustain the integrity of the party.
We will soon come out smiling. PDP is alive and kicking.”
The BoT boss urged party members to support the recociliation effort by sticking with the party and upholding its constitution, assuring that PDP would get it right this time around.
Responding on behalf of the committee members after the inauguration, Gana pledged that they woulg give their very best to the assignment in order to achieve the desired outcome.
He appealed to the warring factional leaders especially Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to give the committee the benefit of the doubt.
