PCN seals unregistered patent medicine shops in Bauchi

Bauchi State chapter of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) has threatened to seal over 1, 600 unregistered patent medicine shops in Bauchi State.
A Task Force of the Patent and Proprietors Vendors License Inspection Committee of the Council, chaired by Mr. Abdu Sule said of the over 2000 medicine shops in Bauchi, only 30% are genuinely registered.
“We have over 2000 medicine shops in Bauchi and only 30% are genuinely registered. That is to say over 1600 patent are not registered in Bauchi metropolis alone not to talk of other Local Government Areas”, Sule said.
The Task Force Chairman, who was represented by the Chairman Bauchi Ctate chapter of the PCN, Jibrin Aliyu Tafida, while inspecting shops of patent medicine vendors in Bauchi, stressed the need for drugs businesses to be regulated and orderly.
Alhaji Abdu Sule stressed that, “We want to be sure all those in the business or operating patent medicine stores are dully registered because we are a regulatory body we will not allowed things to go astray”.
According to him, nobody is allowed to operate if he is not registered. “So if we visit your premises and found out that you are not registered, we will seal your shop and you can see the number of shops visited and the number sealed”
He explained that the Task Force when done with Bauchi metropolis will be moving to the twenty local government areas of the state for same inspection.
Sule also stated that the exercise is a continuous process mainly to monitor and encourage the practitioners by doing the right thing, saying however serious offenders would be prosecuted accordingly.
Also speaking, Bauchi State officer of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, Pharmacists Bakwa Nenlep said that the sole objective of the inspection is to sensitize the vendors on how to run their businesses in the state.
“We understand many want to go into the business without following the right channel, that is why you see the illicit sale of drugs and wrong use of drugs. But that doesn’t mean the Council is not doing its job, that is why you can see we are enforcing the rule and encouraging the patent medicine dealers to register with the council” he concluded.
