Land Scam:  Prof Accuses Anambra   Monarch, Others Of Allegedly Defrauding  Him Of N13.9m

*Royal father declines comment, as Police arrests 2

By; KELVIN OKPARA, Enugu

A  Professor Emeritus in the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Emeka Nwabueze, has accused the  traditional ruler of Isiagu Community in Awka South Council Area of Anambra State, His Royal Highness, Igwe Austin Chukwuma, his cabinet members and other members of the area of allegedly  defrauding him up to the tune of N13.9 million Naira in an alleged coordinated land scam.

But, the  royal father,  refused to make comments on the allegation, despite several calls and messages sent to him for response.

However, one of his subjects and Chairman, Land Committee, Chief Sunday Ozumba, who reacted to the accusation, said  it was not an entire community issue, but a personal deal which he said, is being sorted out, internally.

He said: “This is not an Isiagu affairs, it’s an individual, family affair versus Professor Nwabueze. The matter is being handled internally, no cause for alarm.

” It’s not members of the community, I’ve told you that the matter is being handled internally, just take it like that,” Ozumba said.

Narrating his ordeal, the victim and a retired Professor of Theater and Film Studies, lamented that he has lost all his life entitlement to a ring of land scammers in Anambra State.

He therefore, pleaded with Anambra State Governor,  Chukwuma Soludo, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and every high authority to intervene on the matter and save him from an agony of old age.

According to Nwabueze, “Since 2020, I used my gratuity to purchase seven plots of land from Nwangelekwe Nwosu family in Ishiagu, Awka South LGA. Since then each time I go to work on the property, a crowd will come claiming ownership.

“I went to the Igwe and the town’s land committee and they gave me a clean bill and a certificate of authentication, still the destruction persisted. I went back and they insisted I should go and work, that I should deal with anybody who disturbs me.

“The last was on January 5, when despite my sickness I went to work there. The greatest trouble came up. They destroyed my working implements, seized some of them including the water tank and assaulted the workers.

“It was then that someone came to me and told me that I will be eliminated if I continue, that it is an organized crime in the town where they sell people’s land and set you up to fight the owner, while they continue to smile to the bank, that the Igwe is the leader and that Christian Chukwuma Nwosu who sold the land is their henchman, that the land committee is a hoax.

“I then reported to Zone 13 of Nigeria Police at Ukpo and they made arrests. To cut a long story short, I obtained a court order to detain the seller and the agent who connected me to the land. They have been on detention issuing threats to me and my family.

“Now I heard that the Igwe of the town is going there to facilitate their bail. If they are left to go, that will be an end to the matter as one of them, Okoye, has continued to refuse to answer the police.

“I even talked to the Igwe yesterday and I’m in touch with the police up to the AIG. The police have been quite good, but the plan to release is high. You never can tell.

“The agent who even added extra N3.5 million to the cost, criminally, Mrs. Teresa Beauty Dagga-Nweze is also being detained. The Igwe collects N560,000 from any purchaser and calls it Development Levy. I have my receipt.”

When contacted, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, in charge of zone 13, Ukpo, Anambra State, Mr Godwin Aghaulor  confirmed that the two suspects were under his custody, but that some human rights activists may become interested in the matter if the suspects are detained longer than necessary.

Okhiria lauded the media for being a partner in progress.

“Nigerian Railway Corporation has received the attention it deserves through the media, and we are grateful for this” he added.

He admitted that Nigeria stood a better chance to grow and develop if all hands were on deck.

“Against this backdrop, state governments of Borno, Kaduna, Plateau and Ogun are already partnering the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) with a view to building an efficient railway system in their respective states.

On his part, Mr.Adeleye Ajayi, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ) Lagos Council specially commended Okhiria for repositioning Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

Ajayi commended NRC for the professionalism it displayed in executing the directive of President Bola Tinubu over the 100 per cent discount on train trips for Nigerians that travelled to celebrate Christmas and New Year with their families.

“We applaud NRC for its selfless service to the nation as no fewer than 163,000 Nigerians benefited from the exercise via the three routes being serviced by the Nigerian Railway Corporation from: Lagos– Ibadan, Warri – Itakpe and Abuja– Kaduna.

“We equally salute your cordial relationship with the Minister of Transportation, Sen. Sa’idu Alkali, who recently embarked on the assessment of ongoing works along the Kaduna-Kano and the Kano-Maradi Rail Projects, where he assured the public of the completion of the Kano-Daura segment by 2025.

Pension Fund: Govt Should Not Touch Workers’ Savings – PRP

0

By; SANI ALIYU, Zaria

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has expressed its shocked and outraged by the Federal Government’s announcement to borrow from the pension fund, a move that is not only improper, but a betrayal of the trust of Nigerian workers.

This was contained in a statement signed by its acting National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Muhammad Ishaq and made available to New Nigerian.

It  said the decision to tap into the pension fund, which is meant to provide for the financial security of retired workers, is a clear indication of the government’s lack of vision and accountability.

The party said it is a desperate attempt to plug the holes in its porous budget and finance its reckless spending habits.

Despite government’s inability to improve workers wages to measure up with the standards in other parts of the world, it is perfecting plans to deplete the very contributions that Nigerian workers have made over the years from their meager salaries we all see as “unliving” wages.

This act falls short of the government’s commitment to being responsible and catering for the welfare of its citizens.

According to the statement, PRP demands to know why the government is choosing to raid the pension fund instead of exploring other legitimate sources of funding.

“Is it because they have exhausted all other avenues and are now left with no choice but to resort to this draconian measure?

‘We suspect that this decision is driven by the government’s insatiable appetite for misuse and abuse of resources and its willingness to sacrifice the welfare of Nigerians for its own selfish interests”.

“PRP is concerned about the potential consequences of this decision on the economy and the livelihoods of Nigerian workers”.

“Borrowing from the pension fund will only lead to further inflation, economic instability, and a loss of confidence in the government’s ability to manage the economy”. It said.

The party called on the government to immediately reconsider this decision and explore alternative sources of funding that do not compromise the financial security of Nigerian workers.

The party said this is a clarion call to all Nigerians who value their hard-earned savings and their future security to stand together and resist this attempt to plunder our pension funds.

“PRP will not be silenced by empty promises and half-baked excuses. We demand accountability, transparency, and responsible leadership,” the party said.

0

By; RAYMOND TEDUNJAYE, Lagos

Consequent upon reports of locking up of gates to prevent lawful arrest of suspected criminals by police operatives,  the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Fayoade Adegoke has given an order that such gates should be broken.

Fayoade gave the order while addressing stakeholders at a familiarisation visit to Area “E” command, Festac on Thursday.

He gave the marching order against the backdrop of complaints by the chairman of Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Area “E” command Rotarian Babatunde Williams that residents of some estate within Festac town deliberate lock up their gates to frustrate policemen from arresting suspected criminals, particularly cultists and drug users.

While reacting to the compliant, the Police Boss frowned at such behaviour, saying it is unbecoming of parents who perpetrate such act, adding that it emboldened the criminals.

He asserted that nobody can stop the police from accessing any premises from carrying out lawful investigation or arrest, stressing that no power stops the police under the law.

” Don’t let me hear such complain again. No power stops the police, the police has the power of ingress, nobody can stop the police into any premises. You should break into it, enter and arrest the suspects. You should also arrest the security that lock the gate for obstructing you”, the feasibly angered Fayoade fumed.

Speaking further, the Police Commissioner expressed serious concern over the attitude of some parents who admire and encourage the youths who are into drugs addiction within their estates and lock the gates to cover them from arrest.

” We need to search our hearts to known if we’re actually assisting the society, that some parents are allowing and encourage the youths in drug addiction, by installing Gates and allow them to hibernate and cover them from arrest”, CP Fayoade stressed.

He however, called for more support from the stakeholders, especially in the area of patrol vehicles to enable the visibility of policemen at strategic points of the communities.

In his welcome address earlier, the  Commander Area “E” Command ACP Nwachukwu Eburuaja informed that the command comprises of seven Divisions, adding that they cover a wide range of jurisdictions.

He pointed out that the areas are crime prone because of the large volume of commercial and trade activities along the axis, adding that they have been properly and professionally policed by the respective Divisional Police Officers, coordinated and supported by the himself and the Area Command headquarters.

Nothing that the axis is the gateway to the ECOWAS region, with its multivarious and concommitant troubles associated with trades and mass movement of persons, ACP Eburuaja hinted that the eyes of the officers and men are always on the target for crime prevention and containment.

He however, highlighted the challenges of  the Divisions to include lack of patrol vehicles, shortage of manpower among others.
