Why I oppose Electricity Tariff increase…  Sen. Shehu Sani
By; ABDULL-AZEEZ AHMED KADIR, Kaduna
Senator Shehu Sani representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly said he is opposed to the proposed increase of electricity tariff, especially for residential area consumers, until certain measures are put in place to make life more meaningful for the ordinary man, protect his interest by the government and investors in the power sector.
According to the Senator, such measures include abolition of the fix rate for residential area consumers who are made to pay such irrespective of the fact that there is or no power supply within such a time. Availability and access to billing meters which regulate and prove the amount each household consumes. Replacing of dilapidated electric transformers, provision of more of those with higher capacity to areas with overloaded ones, among others.
Sani made this disclosure Monday in Kaduna while presenting a 300 KVA electricity transformer to Hayin Dan Mani, a surburb of Kaduna metropolis in Igabi Local Government Area, to alleviate the suffering of the people who said they have been without power supply for over three months due to bad electricity transformer.
The Senator, represented by his Special Adviser on Politics and Strategy, hinted that he may make moves to ensure laws are made to protect the interest of the less privileged and the teeming populace, as well, ensure the regulatory bodies live up to their billins by ensuring the people are not shortchanged by electricity distribution companies without commensurate power supply.
The aide said the Senator has undertaken similar intervention within the metropolis and among his constituents with each grossing an average of five million naira.
In his response, the District Head of Hayin Dan Mani, Mallam Abba Abdulahi said the prompt manner Senator Sani responded to their request was overwhelming. According to him, about an hour after calling and requesting for the transformer on phone, Sani sent Engineers to verify their request. And less than a week after that, the transformer was delivered.
He applauded the Senator for coming to their rescue when all hope was almost lost but however requested for more of such gesture as there are more communities within his domain that suffer incessant light out and low power supply due to overloaded and dilapidated transformers.

He however reiterated the resolve of the Nigerian Army to meet the December deadline to end insurgency in the country.
In his remarks, the leader of the British Military Advisory Training Team, Lt. Col Stewart Howells who was said he was once a Senior Non Commissioned Officer, assured the participants of getting the best out of the week long training.

Unemployment; Uni Don calls for Vocational Edu in Post Pri Sch
By; SANI ALIYU, Zaria
A lecturer with the Faculty of Education Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Dr Ayuba Audu Kura has observed that there is a weak link between post-primary education, vocational training and the local labour market to curb unemployment.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with New Nigerian in Zaria on the need to introduce vocational education in post primary schools in Nigeria, Dr Kura said young people are ill-prepared for the job opportunities that abound in the labour market, which in many developing countries are in the informal sector, such as subsistence farming, small-scale construction and informal trade.
According to him, in order to help youngsters meet the challenges of the 21st century and develop into productive, responsible citizens who are well equipped for productive life, the learning process in post primary education in most developing countries need to be reviewed.
“Linking post-primary education and skills training directly to local work is necessary to improve graduates employment and higher education prospects, traditional apprenticeships and on-the-job-training is often the most successful route to skills development especially in preparing young people for work in the informal economy” he stressed.
He advised government on the possible strategies which includes; establishing career counseling, community based seminars on livelihood options, creating business networks, mainstreaming entrepreneurial education in school curriculum and expanding access to financial services among others.

BVN, Cashless policy’ll check money laundering, fraud… CBN
By; Bayo Akamo, Ibadan
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at the weekend declared that the on-going Bank Verification Number (BVN) exercise and the cashless policy will check money laundering and other fraudulent transactions in the banking industry in Nigeria.
CBN Deputy Director, Consumer Protection, Hadjia Khadija Kasim made this assertion while addressing stakeholders at a one-day sensitisation fair held at the Jogor Centre, Ibadan Oyo State .
Hadjiya Kasim said the two policies are fashioned towards enabling CBN and other banks in the country effectively tackle the issue of money laundering.
“You will see some inter-relationship between our cashless policy and the need for us to have our bio-metrics. When you are now registered as a bank customer and your details are there, it will be very difficult for somebody to use that account for any fraudulent activity. So, if any fraudulent activity takes place there, we will be able to trace the owner of the account. The situation where we have faceless people carrying out money laundering or fraudulent transactions will be reduced to the barest minimum” she said.
She however maintained that there will be no extension of time again for the on-going BVN registration exercise. She said those yet to be captured in the exercise should meet up with the deadline which is this week.
“The initial deadline was June 30th before we extended it to the end of this October. By now we expect all Nigerians to go before the expiration date and get their Bank Verification Number” she explained.

Cleric bemoans high rate of robbery incidents in Calabar

Cleric bemoans high rate of robbery incidents in Calabar
By; Vitalis Ugoh, Calabar
A cleric in Calabar, Bishop Emmah Isong has decried high rate of robbery incidents and insecurity in some parts of the state capital and called on security agents to rise up to the challenge to ensure security of lives and property.
The General Overseer of Christian Central Chapel International, urged the media in the state to be proactive in reporting and exposing what he described as “nefarious activities” of these criminals.
He said though the state government was doing its best in trying to tackle insecurity, it is not enough to checkmate the hoodlums. Isong made the challenge weekend when he received members of the central planning committee for the 2015 NUJ Media week in Calabar.
He asserted that early reportage of these incidents will attract the attention of the security agents whose duties it is to protect lives and property of citizens for prompt action.
“I am greatly worried by the high rate of armed robbery and other criminal activities going on in some areas in Calabar. Imagine a situation where armed robbery gang raids a particular area on daily basis, with no obstruction and nobody is saying or doing anything about it. Sometimes the security operatives only arrive after the raids have been completed and people robbed and beaten in their homes; this is unacceptable” the Bishop stressed.
He advised media practitioners to be objective and sincere in carrying out their duties, assuring that there was always a reward for hard-work and sincerity.
He also lamented the high level of poverty in the country, noting that many Nigerians now walk the streets on empty stomach. “When I go out, I see people complain of hunger and starvation. Whenever I come back I see people waiting to ask me for something to eat. They will tell me clearly that, this is not the issue of money, they need something to eat. It is a very serious matter. We know that an idle mind is a devil’s workshop” he lamented.
He called on government at all levels to embark on policies that would directly impact on the citizenry rather than undertaking white elephant projects.
Earlier, Mr Judex Okoro, Chairman of the media week planning committee said the visit was to intimate the Bishop who is the Patron of the union in the state on the programme lined up for the week-long event and for him to make his input. He requested for the physical presence of the Patron especially during the football finals and the public lecture.
Comrade Ndoma Akpet, chairman of Cross River Council of NUJ, assured the clergy that the media would rise up to its responsibility in reporting insecurity in Calabar and the state in general.
The media week holds between 22 and 28 November, 2015.

New Ooni of Ife may emerges in 24 hours

New Ooni of Ife may emerges in 24 hours
By; Bayo Akamo, Ibadan
There are strong indications that the name of a new Ooni of Ife may be announced by the Ife Kingmakers in the next 24 hours, as New Nigerian was reliably informed by sources close to the Ooni’s palace Sunday that the name of the new Ooni is to be announced between Sunday and early Monday.
New Nigerian was authoritatively informed by Palace sources who do not want their names in print that the new Ooni is to emerge from the Giesi ruling house. This is said to be mandated by the Osun State Government through its Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs in line with the Ife Chieftaincy laws.
Investigations by our reporter revealed that all the Ife High Chiefs comprising mainly of the Kingmakers are in last minute crucial meeting to finalise the formal announcement of the new Ooni as at Sunday afternoon.
As a result, security has been beefed up in the ancient town with the deployment of more security personnel as the people of the town await the announcement.
It will be recalled that an Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo last Friday dismissed a suit challenging the competence of the Ooni of Ife 1980 Chieftaincy Declaration. The Ife Kingmakers are relying on this ruling by asking the Giesi Ruling House to present the successor to the late Oba Okunade Sijuwade.
The Lafogido Ruling House through Sooko Adegoke and Prince Marcus Adebola Akimoyero had approached the court to stop Governor Rauf Aregbesola, the Obalufe of Ile-Ife; Oba Solomon Omisakin (now late) and the Lowa of Ife; Chief Joseph Ijaodola from ensuring that only Giesi Ruling House present the next Ooni.
The plaintiffs asked the Court to set aside the 1980 Ife Chieftaincy Declaration which they described as “lopsided, unjust, unconstitutional and unfair.”
Justice Oyebola Adepele Ojo,  in her judgment said the plaintiffs’ litigation was belated as the declaration was made on September 14, 1979 and registered on January 28, 1980.
The judge said the  Lafogido Ruling House should have filed their objection within five years of the registration of the declaration, and the suit was accordingly dismissed.
