Oyo/Osun Custom Command generates N13M, seizes tones of rice
By; Bayo Akamo, Ibadan
The Nigeria Customs and Excise, Oyo / Osun Command has hinted that it generated over N13billion between January and November this year and also seized thousands of tonnes of rice.
The Acting Customs Area Controller for the Command, Mr. Abdulsalam Hassan who dropped this hint during a press briefing also said the command seized 43,120 (50kg) between October and November this year.
According to the Acting Customs Area Controller, the command generated over N23million, a total of 2156 metric tonnes (43,120 (50kg) bags of rice), between October and November 2015 when the restriction on duty collection from the borders was removed.
He noted that the rice was seized from a gang of smugglers in a forest along Kishi-Igbeti axis at 1am, where they were hiding, adding that the rice were brought into the command in five loaded trucks.
Stressing that there will be no going back with duty payment on rice import from the borders, he declared that the Command will continue to educate, guide and facilitate trade to enhance willful compliance while the long arm of the law awaits unrepentant economic saboteurs.
Declaring that no arrest was made during the seizures, Mr Hassan said the culprits took to their heels while efforts are in collaboration with members of the public through the Customs Community Consultative Forum (CCCF) to reduce smuggling into the barest minimum.
“It is troubling to observe that despite the sensitisation and enlightenment campaigns under the platform of Customs Community Consultative Forum (CCCF), some unscrupulous smugglers continue to smuggle. The command will continue to educate, guide, and facilitate trade to enhance willful compliance while the long arm of the law awaits all unrepentant economic saboteurs” he stressed.
