OYHA Okays life imprisonment, 7-20yrs jail term for kidnap offences

Oyo State House of Assembly has recommended life imprisonment as punishment for anyone found guilty of kidnapping, 20 years for aiding kidnapping and 15 years imprisonment for whoever harbors a kidnapped person in and across the state.
Announcing this while submitting report of the House Committee on Judiciary and Justice on Oyo State Kidnapping (Prohibition) Bill, 2015, the Chairman of Committee, Hon. Olukayode Akande declared that the House after reading the bill for the third time passed the bill without further delay.
According to Hon Akande, the punishment of life imprisonment has been recommended for anyone found guilty of kidnap in the state, 7yrs jail for telling lies or give a false information of being kidnapped, 20 years imprisonment for anyone found to be aiding kidnapping as well as 15 years imprisonment for harboring a kidnapped person.
“For anybody that is found guilty of a successful kidnapping it is a life imprisonment. For anyone who aid kidnapping, it is 20 years imprisonment, for anybody that harbor a kidnapped person is 15 years imprisonment and for anybody that provides an aid to kidnap anyone is 25, for anyone who provides information led to successful kidnapping or abduction is 10 years imprisonment and for anyone that lie or give a false information of being kidnapped is 7 years imprisonment, so for various degrees of offfences, there are degrees of punishments,” he said.
Also, at the plenary, the lawmakers directed the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade to provide security at public schools in the state following the increasing cases of street fighting among secondary school students especially within Ibadan metropolis.
Moving the motion the House, Majority leader, Hon Kehinde Subair said this was in line with a “Matter of Urgent Public Importance”.
Commenting on the motion, Hon Akeem Ige lamented the spate of street fightings among the secondary school students in their constituencies, saying, there was the need to put an end to the street fightings among the secondary school students in the state.
