All is set for the 7th Korean Ambassador Taekwondo Championship slated for December 7 and 10, 2016 at the Molade Okoya Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium Surulere, Lagos.
The championships powered by the Korean Embassy in Nigeria with the support of LG Electronics, Samsung and KEPCO Electronics but sanctioned by the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, is expected to attract over 300 athletes from across the country .
Disclosing this to NNSports in Lagos was the President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation and Vice President of the Commonwealth Taekwondo Federation, who is also the Chairman of the organizing committee, George Ashiru, that the championship will feature all the 8 weight categories for men and women as approved by the World Taekwondo Federation as well as the men and women poomsae events.
According to him, the tournament is not only unique but timely as it will help the Federation know the current champions in various weight categories following the surprise results and upsets that were recorded at the last George Ashiru invitational Taekwondo Championship held at the indoor Sports Hall of the University of Lagos, especially now that the National Sports Festival has suffered yet another postponement.
“Besides the championship helping to keep the athletes in form, it will also help to keep them update their knowledge of the game since organizers are reverting to the open individual weights format that creates opportunities for both the elite and the emerging talents to show case their skills and vie for national honours “, Ashiru noted.
However, states wishing to be part of the championship have been advised to forward their entries to the secretariat of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, National Stadium, Surulere Lagos before the close of registration with evidence of an approved Dan and NTF license.
“States have been told to come with their feedings, transportation of their athletes to and fro Lagos as well as other logistics even as payment of affiliation will not be exempted accordingly “. Concluded Ashiru
