Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Joseph Adeniyi Olowofela on Thursday hinted that about 10,000 primary school teachers in Oyo state have been discovered as dormant workers in the verification exercise carried out by the state government.
The Commissioner who dropped this in Ibadan during a chat with newsmen declared that that the 10,000 dormant workers were discovered under the state Universal Basic Education Board adding that it was disturbing and retrogressive.
Professor Olowofela maintained that the result of the verification exercise has further confirmed that there were more teachers in some classes in Oyo state than necessary and that in view of the development, there will be no going back on the planned restructuring of schools in the state.
” Overall in Oyo state of today, we have realised that if we are to go by optimal ratio of 30 pupils to a teacher, then over 10,000 teachers will have to be moved to other productive sectors of the economy. There are schools with no pupils at all, yet teachers are assigned to such schools. In most of the schools visited, we find cases of three teachers per class handling 20 pupils” he said.
Professor Olowofela however assured that there won’t be room for witch -hunting in the planned restructuring of schools in Oyo state.
The Commissioner added that the Governor Abiola Ajimobi led administration has no intention to retrench any civil servant in the state work force, adding that the purpose of the restructuring exercise was to run an efficient and effective administration, adding that the restructuring is inevitable
